This project involved renovating a disused building to create a vibrant space for after school support in Pepper Street, an inner city area in London’s Isle of Dogs. A group of volunteers with social marketing backgrounds renovated the space to provide a nurturing environment for school children to have somewhere to finish or seek help with their homework.
The idea took off very quickly with volunteer teachers and mentors able to identify specific learning needs. For example, many students sought help with mathematics which led to the development and provision of masterclasses in areas such as geometry and algebra.
The charity takes its name from this pilot community initiative in Pepper Street.
